90%

LSK’s DNA - “Home Visitation”
Both principal Mrs E Tan & level head Mrs ML ever shared with me that teachers themselves got to first believed in it first before going houses to houses willingly as “Home Visitation” DEFINITELY takes up teachers' personal time.

I was informed during the interview about it but I didn’t expect the “intensiveness”.

Home visitation officially started after cny in Term 2.
During then was “indirectly pressured” by Mrs ML to visit as many/fast as possible.
But as I was still struggling with other things, I was still only on “take-thing-easy mode”. At times still complained about home visitation. After each visit, we will be required to write/submit “Visitation Report” then update “Visitation List”.

Come Term 3, I was on “take-thing-fast mode” but months before PTM, I was on “full gear mode” so to minimize the parents coming for PTM. Then was really intense… one day can max up to 3 houses or a few children in a week.

Thank God when it was Term 4, I was only left with less than 5 children to visit.

My greatest joy - I used to complain and dislike home visitation, especially when I got to do it after school hours but… but that was in the past!
Now I simply enjoyed going from house to house, spent hours talking to parents and getting to know the child/family more and better.

At the end of 2010 school year, I can declare
“I have cleared 90% of visitation!”

I am sooooooo happy!
According to my level head, our level K2 teachers did better this year cause last year K2 teachers didn’t managed to cover as many as us.

@@!

When I first took over the morning K2 class, I was “informed” about Child G’s mother cause she can be quite you know you know.

I trembled~~~ each time I made calls to her.

Our first face-to-face session was at their place, home visitation.
Z Laoshi and myself were welcomed with a “cool” face. Throughout the conversation, she doesn’t really smile, not much “casual moments” from her and her tone sounded like she will eat us up anytime. Haha! But thank God the visitation eventually ended well.

At the recent forum event, we needed children to perform and Child G was selected and again I was like -_- cause got to communicate with the mum. Opps!

When the performance ended, Child G came to the booth with the parents. They got Child G to give me a hug before they go off. Seconds later, I found Child G’s mum walked to me, raised her hand and GAVE ME A HUG!!!!! “Thank you Miss Lim! You are a good teacher!”

Trust me, I was shocked… very very shocked!!!

Was sharing with Z Laoshi that if it was so and so’s mother who hug me then maybe I wont be as shocked as I am when Child G’s mother hugged me.
It just shocked me BIG BIG time!
Even when I shared with my colleagues, especially those who know Child G’s mother’s style were also shocked.

I really thank God for the “broken of barrier” and the favor and breakthrough!

more and more and MORE

Putting aside the physical tiredness recently, my spirit had been lifted up time and time again. Received many affirmations/encouragements from principal Mrs E Tan and the different parents.

Will keep all close to my heart, it will definitely be something (like energy bars) that will keep me going and going and going & doing more and more and more in this field. Even a simple card/gift with just "Thank you" brought great warmth to my heart! =)

Hi Ms Lim, my husband and I are very grateful and we sincerely thank God for you and the Chinese teacher for teaching and taking care of Child K. “He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” 2 Cor 9:6
Thank you very much!
- Mr & Mrs K

Dear Ms Lim, I would really want to thank you sincerely for teaching and loving Child T. She has really grown in LSK. In fact, she cried when she came home. We are really going to miss you all in school. Pls keep us involved in the school’s activities should LSK need our help.

Thanks Ms Lim. Child T will be delighted! As a teacher myself, I really feel that you are a wonderful teacher and influence to the kids. Please be encouraged and continue to stay in the profession.
- Mrs Y

From principal Mrs E Tan on different occasion:

“Excellent! You are a “chili padi”.. Young and well contained with much to offer. Its my prayer that you would be given an opportunity to run a pre-school one day.. Not everyone can blend in well with colleagues, children and parents. Way to go, Yanni!”

“You did the lesson well! Objectives met. I “saw” some ways to do resource, during your lesson.”

“That’s why I like about you! Always follow up and always so sensible! You will be an asset to any organization!”

Some gifts that I received during the last week and last day of school...

Jiayou Miss Lim!

Generous

LSK is generous, a giving kindergarten! Not just to other kindergartens in term of sharing/giving their resources etc, the teachers in term of welfare, words of affirmation, $$ rewards etc and the children too!

One of the many things that got me @@! when I first joined LSK…
Throughout the year, every child’s birthday will be celebrated during assembly with the entire school. They can come in their favourite wear - so far we met “Snow White”, “Princess”, “Little Prince” etc.

Their parents will also be allowed to enter the school to share/capture the moments. Each child will then get a present that is nicely wrapped from the school.

Is a daily-thingy, whenever the child’s birthday falls on. Even when there are more than one child on the same day, each will get their own birthday song and “limelight”. When I first learnt about it, I thought is something sweet - making every child feels special and important.

I’m amazed, so very amazed when I learnt about the following:
First day of Week 9, LSK gave each K2 graduate a Children’s Bible!!!

And for the whole of Wk 9 and Wk 10, principal had bible-reading with the K2 children. Mrs E Tan taught the children how to be still to listen to the Holy Spirit as they read the different chapters/books.

Children listening to the Holy Spirit…

Children came with their bookmarks at the chapters that they read...

Loooooooooongest - 2

The busyness of work went over to weekend… ever in school on Sat but still my FIRST time in school on a Sun!

Sat 13/11

Spent solid 13hrs in school - from 930am to 1030pm!

Throughout the day, few other levels’ teachers came back in the morning to send their photos to develop and in the afternoon to do their work too. But all K2 teachers, Mrs M Low, Z Laoshi & myself were back!
Thankfully, principal Mrs E Tan actually helped us sorted the children’s stacks of mindmap and arranged the dividers for us. How many principal will actually do that?

Z Laoshi & my desk…

Mrs M Low’s desk…

It went on and on and on… finally done with 20 worksheets + few activity sheets for each child. With the arrival of photos that came @ 2plus, we went straight to sorting the photos accordingly. We went on again and this time to paste the photos, stapled the stack together and final check for “mistakes”.

Really JUMPED FOR JOY when one class of portfolio done then followed by 2nd, a total of 49 children. In the midst, we the K2 teachers went “crazy” - singing song to ask God for help, talked “nonsense” and even shouted “Help! Help!”. Haha!

Sun 14/11
JAMs then main service
(Thank God for strength… zzz monster didn’t visit me during service)

Straight after service, cab over to collect outstanding photos before I made my way to school after swallowing my lunch.

That day was from probably 4pm to 9pm… did photos captions.
And while waiting for free ride, helped Mrs E Tan who with the help of Mrs M Low’s two children, pushed out all the stuffs from all the classrooms.

This I really must salute her… she knows that all the teachers been busy over the week thus she helped us to push out the things first cause with that following day on Mon, the teachers wont have to come earlier to do “physical exercise”.

At evening time, one K1 teacher came back with her stacks of portfolio to paste her photos and another nursery teacher came back with her "troop" of family members to help her with compiling of portfolio.

Back home, can’t sleep immediately, got to work on children’s remarks. Not type but handwritten for 49 children. Write until hand numb and eyes went crossed. Haha!
The following day Mrs E Tan were joking that from the handwritten remarks, she can see that the teachers are tired cause some of the letter went “funny”.

Mon 15/11
Jumped up from bed @ 5plus and set off to school.
Passed done written remarks to Mrs E Tan for check and signature.

Stayed back after dismissal to do the final:
1) file in the remarks into observation file

2) paste the captions on each photo
Went to office to show “victory” sign when … … “ALL FINISHED!!!”
While other levels’ teachers were still working in their classroom, K2 teachers were all done and “relaxing“! Really thank God for that!

Tues 16/11
All items returned to the children
Whew~~~~~~~

In conclusion…
Hmm… to think about it, maybe others who look at us may think “since got so many things to do, so why do it so last minute?”
Trust me, not because we want to, we just cant help. All of us were busy from the “beginning”, also prior to that we were busy with concert and there are couple of things which the teachers cant do it early.

At the end of the busy period, really thank God for His grace & His strength! With the limited time, all the teachers managed to clear the work load before the due date.
And despite the late nights, none of the teachers were down physically. As for myself, despite of the the "intense work" + late nights, I was not tired/sleepy during school hours.

Despite of the busyness, thank God an unstress atmosphere + a group of happy colleagues! Instead of losing our cool or get irritated easily, we were laughing + joking + eating away! This definitely made the busy hourssssssss passed easily!

Loooooooooongest - 1

finally finally finally FINALLY get a chance to blog… been busy whole of last week - the looooooongest 7days school week!

With the end of the concert, it was another “load” being lifted for all teachers but we still cant enter into “rest” cause got to rush the stuff to return to the children at the end of school term.

Though we were still in celebration mode last week but we went straight into “serious business” - cleared all outstanding work that the children missed during the concert practice period.

To do items:
1) Portfolio
… consists of children’s work (Language & Literacy, Math, Art, My Favourite) and photos
… excluding the cover page, sub-dividers, each child has 20 worksheet + 4 photos
… caption for each photo
2) Term worksheet (English & Math)
Due Date: Tues 16/11
3) Observation file
… “grades” & remarks (handwritten) for individual child

The loooooooong week started on Wed… since then, not a day I left school at “normal timing” - first was late 6plus then 7plus then 8plus and towards the weekend was 10plus. Had late also cause on certain days, I still have work to do when I got home.

Wed 10/11
Mrs E Tan released us early from meeting for us to meet up with our own level teachers to go through and finalize items in portfolio.
After that, spent time working on photos - is one thing to have taken many photos over one year and is another to search the many photos to look for the suitable 4 photos. Before I left for zone mtg, I complied children’s term worksheet. Back from zone mtg, still have to do some work.

Thurs 11/11
It was WORK WORK WORK straight after dismissal. “Searched out” all done worksheet, checked through and sorted it according to individual child. I knocked out not long after I hit the bed but “jumped up” @ 3am plus to finalize photos as got to send to develop the next day.

Fri 12/11
Mrs E Tan returned us the draft of children’s remarks.

“Real work” began… Children’s portfolio!
Rare sight: all the classroom lights on even after 8pm!
Basically all levels of teachers stayed back to finish their work. It was intense!
With the intention to collect the photos asap, I rushed over to nearby shopping centre with Mrs M Low and my class’ ready-photos @ 8plus. Spent a while there as got to develop 4 photos each for ~100 children. Returned back to school to continue work before I left with Z Laoshi @ 10plus.

Concert Night 2

The teachers reported slightly earlier on the 2nd day.
After our pack-ups, checks and prepared the costumes/props etc for the night… we gathered back at main hall for praise & worship.

Just before the principal said a prayer, she shared with us the “happening moments” on stage on first night. It was hilarious!
Like what Pst S told us before the concert - "All done, now is to leave everything to God. Teachers, don't be stress and have fun! At the end of the day, the “mistakes” made by the children should not be corrected or reprimanded.
Let them have fun too!"

Though 2nd night’s helpers are fewer but we were faster. Thank God that everything went on well "behind the scene"!

As K2s are the graduating classes thus they have high involvement in the concert. And as the form teachers, Mrs ML, Z Laoshi and myself too were much involved - that's the stressing part
! We too got to be on stage to sing/do the actions with the children and also to take the lead for the "Grand Entrance".

A week before the concert, principal Mrs E Tan gave each of the teacher 4 tickets to each night of concert so to invite our friends/family.

On the 2nd night, I invited two of my ex-colleagues who one brought her friend and another her son.
As both of them are non-believers, I'm glad that both of them sat through when LSBC pastor went up to give a Word (trying to "kill" time while the children get changed). I'm also glad that they were touched by the concert.

Also managed to invite Mr Cher & Mr Teng. Really appreciate their presence … at first I find it “funny” to invite them as afterall they are not in this field so afraid they may find it bored or something and of course know they are both busy people.

During the dismissal, saw another special guest Miss Loh who came with a balloon “For A Super Teacher". Really appreciate her effort, thoughts, presence & present.

They joined me over @ MPH where I met up with parents and children for small chats and photo-takings. They too joined in the fun!

The teachers gathered back for the final debrief & thanksgiving session! “Hugs” and “Thank you” were given and said…
Ended the night with a great feast with Miss Loh, Mr Cher & Mr Teng!

ps: ALL the photos used in this entry are courtesy of Mr Cher! Thankiew! =)

Concert Night 1

ps: WARNING! is going to be a loooooong entry!

“Heaven” - the theme for LSK Concert 2010

Teachers/Helpers were in school from 3pm…

After the final check of costumes, accessories, props, cert & name list etc... teachers gathered at the main hall for a time of intercession. LSBC’s Children Church Pastor gave us a Word.

Teachers released at 5plus for a quick dinner...
K2 teachers didn’t get to eat as the graduation gowns arrived late thus we need to do the sorting of sizes.

Teachers reported back in class at 5plus plus…
Arrival of children at 545pm…

Immediately after a quick snack, we changed them into their graduation gown, did their hair before putting on their mortar hat by supporting with many clips.

K2 graduates moved up to L2 at 650pm…
Commencement of Concert at 7pm…
K2 graduation ceremony started shortly after speech by principal…

Straight after the graduation ceremony/song items we rushed back to class to change the children into their dance costume, touched up their hair and put on flower band on the girls’ head.

After the Grand Entrance of all levels, we waited a while before we got the K2 children ready for their dance item. Immediately after that, we went backstage to get ready for Grand Finale.

Dismissal at 9plus…
It was really heart-warming to see the expression of the parents when they received their children. They were all so happy and so proud of their children of their many performances and stunts.

One of the parents welcomed her a girl with a happy greeting of “Congratulations!” and a bouquet of flower.
One of the parents commented to her son “Oh! I didn’t know you can do that!”

Went over MPH where there were still children/parents around… took photos with few of them… with the spotlights and cameras, felt like “Superstar” too! Haha!

Teachers gathered for a short debrief & a time to glorify God…
Final checks before all left the school at 10plus…

All in all - right from the start of graduation ceremony to graduation item to grand entrance to dance item to grand finale … the children did their best and trust me, they were great!

At the end of the day…
Of course was tired but heart was filled with great joy and great gratitude! All the hard work - definitely worth it!

to be continued...

I'm back!

With the little free time that I have in the morning, I went back to my previous kindergarten, HT Schoolhouse yesterday to visit my ex-angels & ex-colleagues.

The current K2 is the last batch of students I ever taught during my stay there. During my “departure” then, I promised that I will visit them when I’m free and will be there for their graduation concert which is happening next month.

It was a pleasant trip - saw couple of news faces (both children and teachers).
Glad to see some of the signs/wordings that I did previously being “reused”.

“Teacher Lim!” and “shocked faces” were what welcomed me when I stepped into K2 class. Child S even passed me a little drawing … they were informed beforehand that I be coming. They didn't say much but during their work/dance time, on and off they turned their head over/up to look at me.

And I think it shocked them when I still remembered their name! =)

Besides catching up with few ex-colleagues, I said hi to my ex-principal, the bus aunty and even went to disturb the cook aunty who I used to "disturb".

On the way home with one of my ex-colleagues, she was telling me how different it is now to work in HT Schoolhouse - the new colleagues, the style, the new system etc.

Seriously (even without her telling me the “stories”), as I look at my “past” and “present”, I’m grateful to God that I found a better environment to work in. =)

@ the bus-stop, quite nervous actually…

the path I used to walk…

tomorrow

The children had their last dance practice and received their “final words” from the teachers early this morning.
There wont be any more practice on the concert day itself thus that’s it!
We did our best and now is to let God do the rest!

Was just “chatting” with the children.
Everything started 2-3months ago…

From “Children, your concert is in the month of Nov!” to “Children, your concert is next month!” to “Children, your concert is in two weeks time!” to “Children, your concert is next week” to finally now… “Children, your concert is TOMORROW!!!”

Straight after dismissal, the teachers gathered for a 1hr concert briefing. We were then released to set up the school, the hall and the classroom for our 1st night of concert! Also did final touch-up on the dance accessories. It was already 7plus when I left school.

Looking forward to LSK Concert 2010!!!

Heard from colleagues and some parents (during visitation) that LSK concert is very grand. When we were setting up the queue post earlier, I was shocked when I heard that as there were no designated seats, the queue last year started early and went very long.

A little peek into our dance practices...
